Culag ‘Access for All’

Thought to be one of the longest paths of its type in the Highlands, a new 1.5 km all abilities path is enabling easy access to the wild and beautiful Scottish landscape. Located on the Little Assynt Estate, about 6 miles east of Lochinver, Sutherland, the path has gentle gradients, as level a surface as possible and winds its way past the shores of two lochs; reaching a viewpoint of mountains and lochs. There are heather thatched shelters and compost loos as well as trout fishing by permit and a specially adapted boat suitable for disabled anglers.

The facility was the vision of the local charity Culag Community Woodland Trust who now manages the estate following its purchase on behalf of the community. It was funded by a number of public bodies and charitable trusts and its completion in 2005 was also marked with publication of a beautifully illustrated booklet on the estate describing its natural history, historic landscape and other routes on the land.

The path is proving to be a most valued resource for locals and visitors to the area; young and old alike, and the feedback has been really positive. It has been described as superb, wonderful and imaginative!
